渡瀬恒彦主演「十津川警部」シリーズ第20弾。東京と札幌を結ぶ寝台特急カシオペアを舞台とした難事件に挑む。ゲスト女優の古手川祐子は、渡瀬恒彦たっての希望で実現したキャスティング。また脚本も、絶大な信頼をもつ竹山洋に執筆を依頼。「ストーリーだけを追いがちなサスペンス作品が多い中、登場人物の人間性を追いかけるドラマを書いている。今シリーズの初作品も担当し、頭と骨組みを作ってくれた」と渡瀬は竹山を絶賛。人間ドラマと巧妙に仕掛けられたトリックが描かれている。
【ストーリー】
都内で14歳の少女・ミユキ（河辺千恵子）が誘拐された。犯人はミユキの父親・小野（後藤ひろゆき）に2億円を持って寝台特急カシオペアに乗るように指示。通報を受けた十津川警部（渡瀬恒彦）と亀井刑事（伊東四朗）は、東北新幹線で先回りしカシオペアに乗り込む。しかし十津川らが駆けつけた時には、小野も2億円も消えていた。
車内に残り捜査を続ける十津川の前に、左肩に黒い蝶の刺青をした美しい女性・香織（古手川祐子）が現れた。香織は戸田（美木良介）と行動を共にしているらしい。香織が事件に関係していると思った十津川は、小西刑事（中西良太）に尾行を命じて帰京する。すると函館に着いた小西から、男女のカップルが函館駅の裏で射殺されたと連絡が入った。そしてその現場付近で香織の姿が目撃されていた。知らせを聞いた十津川は、急いで札幌へと向かう。
