Once upon a time, a young and cheerful painter named Makar was invited to the king's palace... There he saw a beautiful woman trying on a crown. Makar fell in love, but was expelled from the palace. After undergoing all kinds of trials and heroic deeds, the former painter came to the palace to ask for the princess's hand in marriage, but saw before him a capricious ugly woman—and realized that he had been enchanted by the servant Katya.

This is a part of an omnibus film called Pribitie Poezda (Arrival of a Train) made by several Russian directors, as an homage to brothers Lumiere on the 100th anniversary of cinematography.
One of the three films that comprise Arrival of a Train, a collection of shorts made to celebrate the centenary of cinema. Set at the turn of the 20th century, the film follows Trofim, a Russian peasant jealous of his wife for having an affair with his brother. Trofim kills his brother and runs away to St. Petersburg. Then Trofim steps off the train in St. Petersburg, a cameraman who happens to be shooting on the platform captures his arrival.

Louis is a brooding loner who lives with two large white dogs in a forest near the French-Swiss border. His estranged son Sidney lives with his wife in a village nearby. Louis is carrying on an affair with the local pharmacist and carrying a torch for a beautiful, feral local dog breeder. He suffers a mild heart attack, and buys a new heart on the black market. Then he travels to South Korea, where he buys a boat and sails it to his former home, a dilapidated shack on a remote island south of Tahiti. His dream is to find the son he sired decades earlier when he lived there. However, once he is settled, his body begins to reject the alien heart.

In Kaliningrad two Lithuanian boys meet two Russian girls. They have difficulties in finding places where they can sleep together. But this is the only problem they do solve. All four justly feel miserable because their lives are meaningless (the recurrent dull and poorly kept house façads could well be taken as a comparative symbol). In addition, everyone is so absorbed by his or her own distress and hardly capable of bothering about the anguish of the others. The three days end with a pervasive lack of contact.

A photographer and an unemployed woman embark on a chaotic trip to the California desert for a photo shoot, filled with passionate encounters and frequent fights. Their seemingly empty relationship takes a dark turn when a brutal incident abruptly ends their journey.
