上世纪末，北京餐饮百年老店万唐居掌灶师傅杨越均有意让三徒弟樊大成做自己的接班人，但是樊大成想离开万唐居出去闯荡，拒绝了师傅的美意。樊大成出走后事业做得风生水起，而万唐居却因大徒弟冯炳阁经营不善濒临破产。为了守住万唐居，樊大成筹措资金接盘万唐居并进行大刀阔斧的改革，提出了新中餐的概念，万唐居很快走出阴霾并成为中餐界的标杆企业。在大量新餐饮品牌和资本进入北京的时代背景下，万唐居面临巨大的市场压力，樊大成谨记师父嘱托，不忘传承使命，在市场博弈中几度沉浮，经历了投资失败以及万唐居经营权被夺走的痛楚。众师兄弟们齐心协力，重新收回了万唐居。
