Based on Roy Horniman's novel Israel Rank, A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder finds Monty Navarro, a British commoner, discovering that he's ninth in line to inherit the Earldom of Highhurst and electing to murder the members of the odious D'Ysquith family standing in his way. In the process Monty keeps a mistress, Sibella Hallward, and courts the comely young Phoebe D'Ysquith.

The plot follows Heidi Holland from high school in the 1960s to her career as a successful art historian more than twenty years later. The play's main themes deal with the changing role of women during this time period, describing both Heidi's ardent feminism during the 1970s and her eventual sense of betrayal during the 1980s. Though most of the characters are women, there are two important male characters; Peter Patrone, a gay pediatrician who is arguably Heidi's best friend, and Scoop Rosenbaum, a magazine editor who marries and has many affairs, and with whom Heidi has a tense friendship.

In Hell, imp Blitzø (the 'o' is silent) runs an assassin business targeting the world of the living, using a spell book borrowed from a prince of the underworld. With employees Moxxie, Millie, and Loona, they attempt to survive each other while keeping business afloat.

The dark secrets of Holly's seemingly perfect life are exposed when an unwanted intruder spins her life out of control forever.
