Por volta de 1510, um navio português naufragou na região da Bahia. Deste naufrágio salvou-se Diogo Álvares, que foi amparado pelos índios Tupinambá. O tempo foi passando e o convívio com os índios estava ótimo. Adotado pelos índios, recebeu o nome de "Caramuru". Aprendeu a linguagem e os costumes indígenas.
Paraguaçu converteu-se ao catolicismo, batizando-se com o nome de Catarina Paraguaçu. Começava uma nova etnia na Bahia (mameluco ou caboclo). Surgiram as primeiras famílias baianas. O caboclo habita o sertão baiano.
Em 1536 chegou à capitania da Bahia de Todos os Santos, o donatário Francisco Pereira Coutinho. Coutinho obrigava os índios a trabalhos duros. Caramuru aconselhou-o a não maltratá-los para que a paz reinasse entre os colonizadores e os indígenas. Mas o donatário continuou a castigar os indígenas. Revoltados, os índios Tupinambá deixaram os colonos sem água, desviando o leito dos rios. Coutinho obrigou-se a fugir para Porto Seguro.
Tempos depois, Caramuru foi a Porto Seguro e convenceu Coutinho a voltar. Mas o navio bateu nos rochedos da ilha de Itaparica. Os que sobreviveram foram devorados pelos Tupinambá, já que eram antropófagos (canibais). O único a se salvar foi Diogo Álvares, o Caramuru.
Quando Tomé de Souza, primeiro governador-geral do Brasil chegou à Salvador ouviu os conselhos de Caramuru e obteve a ajuda dos índios Tupinambá que ajudaram os portugueses na construção da cidade. Caramuru era o intermediador entre os índios e o governador. Caramuru, casou-se com a índia Paraguaçu, que foi batizada na França, recebendo o nome Catarina Álvares Paraguaçu. A índia era dona de muitas terras, fervorosa em sua fé, construiu um oratório, que depois virou uma igreja, onde foi sepultada.
