At the end of the 1950s, French documentarian François Reichenbach spent eighteen months traveling the United States, documenting its diverse regions, their inhabitants, and their pastimes. The result is a journey through a multitude of different Americas, filtered through a French sensibility.

The film is based on the short story, No oyes ladrar los perros, written by Juan Rulfo and collected in El llano en llamas. The short story tells the tale of an old man carrying his wounded (criminal) son on his back in search of help. The film has a younger father carrying his sick child on his back looking for help. Meanwhile he tells his son about what his future life will be like. The film intercuts between the story of the man and his child and the possible future of the child as a young indigenous man looking for work in Mexico City.

Abdulaye Faye,23 ,is a young black man from Senegal.While working in a factory ,he is training for a boxing match. He is an endearing guy, a bit naive,but,as the title reads ,he's really bighearted . We follow him through the streets of Paris . He meets a Japanese girl and they go boating but their relationship comes to a sudden end:she's married . Abdulaye is a true believer,he puts his trust in God ;he also goes to see a fortune-teller whose predictions can be summed up as "when there's a will,there's a way".
