A couple whose son had been institutionalized for three years are shocked to discover that the diagnosis was wrong, and that their son is, in fact, deaf.

However, what he discovers under the city is a tribe of Native American mice who were driven underground by prejudiced European immigrants.

Unaware of this, the Mousekewitz's begin their journey west, while their true cat friend, Tiger, follows intent on following his girlfriend gone in the same direction.
