The film tells the story of Wan Tongshu's artistic life in rescuing and preserving the Uyghur Twelve Muqam. It showcases the historical truth of how the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government have attached great importance to cultural endeavors in ethnic minority regions, vigorously carried out the rescue of traditional culture in those areas, and achieved great merits in striving to strengthen the sense of community for the Chinese nation.

读不懂汉字的父亲正试图了解女儿们的成长心事。在父亲与两位女儿的“博弈”中，“异乡人”的身份或许让他们疏远，但亲密的爱意依旧在对话中生长。

故事发生在上世纪四十年代末期，美丽的南疆姑娘阿娜尔罕（迪丽热巴 饰）爱上了英俊帅气的小伙子库尔班（阿卜力克木·阿卜来提 饰），然而，情投意合的两人却并没有顺利的走到一起。只因为贪婪邪恶的大地主乌斯曼伯克（吐尔洪·依明 饰）看中了阿娜尔罕的美貌，想要讨好专员伊明（尼加提·吐尔逊 饰）的他决定将阿娜尔罕献给伊明成为后者的小妾。
这一举动自然遭到了阿娜尔罕和库尔班的强烈抵抗，愤怒之中，乌斯曼伯克设计陷害了阿娜尔罕，导致这个无辜的姑娘家破人亡。解放军来了，备受压迫和剥削的日子总算看到了尽头，然而乌斯曼伯克和伊明不愿承认现实负隅顽抗。
