1934年7月，国民党军又集中32个师的兵力向中央苏区中心区域发起全面进攻，形势日益恶化，红军陷入更加被动的境地。中央书记处、中央革命军事委员会被迫进行战略大转移，并命令六军团先行突围，拉开了中国工农红军长征的序幕。任弼时、萧克、王震领导的六军团经过艰苦卓绝的斗争，于10月23日在黔东印江木黄与贺龙领导的江三军胜利会师，不退反进，继尔发动湘西攻势，直接威胁国民党统治腹地武汉、长沙，牵制了国民党军十一个师又两个旅的兵力，为中央红军的战略大转移创造了有利的条件有力地策应中央红军完成了中国历史上最伟大的长征。中央红军到达陕北后，红二、六军团才开始长征。他们攻取湘中、再转黔东，突破乌江、实施乌蒙回旋战，既要与数十倍于自己的敌军周旋，又要在通讯困难的情况下与中央建立联系。佯攻昆明、巧渡金沙，1936年7月在川康地区与红四方面军会合，并促成了红四方面军北上，1936年10下旬最终形成了中国工农红军三大主力会师的大好局面。二、六军团转战八省，行程二万余里，经历大小战斗几百次，付出了重大牺牲，为中国革命做出了巨大贡献。毛泽东主席在陕西保安会见红二、四方面军领导时说，出贵州、过乌江，中央红军付出了大代价，二方面军讨了巧，就没有吃亏。
