1935年5月，长征途中红军渡过金沙江进入四川凉山地区。这一带是少数民族聚集的地区。
蒋介石为了剿灭红军，调动了几十万大军妄图把红军围堵在大渡河以南。为了能顺利前进，中共党中央委派刘伯承、聂荣臻带领红军先遣队为大部队开路。一路上先遣队英勇作战，同时沿途宣传党的民族政策。
凉山地区，由于国民党反动派长期对彝族人民实行残酷压迫，民族隔阂较深。红军进入彝族区后，彝族群众受到蒙蔽，不明真相，对红军实行处处阻挡的政策。
红军坚持严格执行党的民族政策，无论受到何种困难和刁难，都坚持不向受苦的彝族同胞开枪。
这一切，彝族同胞都看在眼里，头人小叶丹深受感动。他们申明大义，决心军民结盟一起抗击国民党反动派。当时的红军参谋长刘伯承和小叶丹在彝海歃血为盟，先遣队胜利地完成了任务，彝族人民送红军踏上新的征途。
