冒頭に、昭和天皇が登場する。昭和の山村を舞台にした作品であるが、そうではない。戦死したフィアンセを待つ悲恋の物語であるが、そうではない。『あなたにゐてほしい~SOAR~』を見終えたあと観客は「一体全体なんだったの か?」心地よく深い混乱に包まれるであろう。原は、劇映画という括りの中で、ついに独自の世界を構築したのだ。美しい映像と音楽が溢れる原ワールドに身を置き、ゆっくり吟味して欲しい。ゴダールか? フェリーニか? そうではない。展開されるのは、純粋な原 將 人の映画哲学なのである。またある意味『初国知所之天皇』と並んで天皇制を語った系列にも属する。初国復活ロードショーにおいて、処女作『おかしさに彩られた悲しみのバラード』とプログラムに組み込まれた所以である。鈴木清順監督の最後の映画出演作ともなった。

那是昭和二十年的盛夏。在一望无际的太平洋海面上，两个鱼雷夹着一个空空的汽油筒在飘浮。油筒里坐的是一个憨厚老实的学生兵，绰号是“那家伙”。原来广岛发生原子弹爆炸事件后，“那家伙”就成了一名特攻队员。而特攻队员的任务就是带着两颗鱼雷去撞击敌方的军舰。在执行任务之前，上级给了他们一天的外出时间。“那家伙”走出了营门，并有意无意地闯进了女人窝。他与一个小姑娘彼此产生了好感，二人在一个防空洞里产生了肉体关系。就在这天晚上，小姑娘被敌方的空袭炸死，“那家伙”也奉命带着两颗鱼雷来到了太平洋上。这个时候日本已经宣布投降，“那家伙”却一点都不知道，还在一门心思想着执行任务，结果错把一艘尿处理船当成了敌方的航空母舰并发射了鱼雷。当他被尿处理船救起以后，才知道战争已经结束了。

关西某小镇，当地有一家年代悠久的澡堂。老板清水忠雄（江夏豊 饰）的女儿阿凉（UA 饰）被人称作“水之女”，因为每当阿凉身边有大事发生时，那几天就会下雨。这一日，父亲突发心脏病去世，未婚夫也因车祸不幸丧生，接二连三的灾难让阿凉完全失去依靠。这天，大雨瓢泼。
为了医治心灵的创伤，阿凉暂时关闭澡堂，前往富士山旅行。当她返回家中，却发现一个男人正坐在房间内悠然自得地吃饭。这个名叫宫泽优作（浅野忠信 饰）的家伙是一个警方通缉的逃犯，他自称火能让他平静下来。关闭已久的澡堂再次开张，两个拥有不同经历的沦落人相互扶持开始新的人生。然而……
