ある夜、土屋徹生（柄本佑）がふと目覚めると、そこは会社の会議室だった。
いつものように家に帰ると、妻の千佳（鈴木杏）が言葉を失いおびえているようで、様子がおかしい。
そこへ１歳だったはずの息子が起きてくるが、どう見ても４歳にはなっている。
やがてひとりの役人が訪ねて来てこう言った――「あなたは亡くなったんです、３年前に」。
テレビやネットには、死んだはずの人間が世界中でよみがえっているというニュースがあふれていた。
だが徹生には死の記憶がない。会社の屋上から転落したというが、事故・自殺、どちらも身に覚えがなく釈然としなかった。

天保末期。老中・水野忠邦による改革の効なく、江戸下層階級の窮乏は更に激化していた。そんな中、若い泥棒・勇吉は、一家6人総出で働きづめ金を貯め込んでいるという噂のおかつの家に侵入する。ところが、おかつたちが貯めている金は、3年前、生活に困った挙げ句、仕事場の帳場から盗みを働いたおかつの長男・市太の大工仲間である源さんが牢から出て来た時に、新しい仕事の元手にする為のものだったのだ。そのことをおかつから聞かされた心根の優しい勇吉は、他人の為にそこまでやるおかつたちの気持ちに感動し何も盗らずに去ろうとするが、そのままおかつに引き留められ、彼女の5人の子供たちと一緒に暮らすことになる。やがて、おかつによって身元の証の書付まで用意して貰った勇吉は、市太の紹介で職にも就いた。「俺ァ、生みの親にもこんなにされたことがなかった」。ある日、勇吉は感謝の気持ちを口にした。しかし、それを聞いたおかつは声を震わせて怒鳴った。「子として親を悪く云うような人間は大嫌いだよ!」。その言葉に、一層、人間を心底愛するおかつの心を知った勇吉は、心の中でそっと呟いた。「かあちゃん」と。
