冷战结束前夕，东德男孩Hansel为逃离所谓“禁锢”，追求西方世界宣扬的“自由”，被迫经历身份的转变，使用母亲Hedwig的名字来到美国，但很快被抛弃。

闯荡美国，她爱上了雇主的儿子Tommy，本以为是情投意合的灵魂伴侣，Tommy却在剽窃了她的音乐作品后，弃之而去，独自名利双收。

再次经历创伤的她组建了乐队“The Angry Inch”，与伙伴Yitzhak在Tommy演唱会场馆外的酒吧演出。Hedwig通过夸张的妆发和狂躁的音乐宣泄愤怒，回顾了寻寻觅觅的一生。最终，她在音乐中拥抱了残缺的自己，完成了自我觉醒，实现了自我救赎……

在以撤的介紹下，希域出場，並介紹著自己的樂隊以及助手兼丈夫以撤。希域指自己是個飽歷風霜之人，並把他的故事回到最頭。("Tear Me Down")小時候，他是一個美國大兵和東德女人之子，名字叫作漢素，並對搖滾樂及哲學著迷。即使父親很早便離棄了他們，其母又非常專制，她卻說了一個故事令他留下了深刻印象，同時亦堅定地想找尋自己的另一半。("The Origin of Love")長大後他愛上了另一個美國大兵盧化，為了脫離共產主義的東德，他便想跟盧化一起回去美國。("Sugar Daddy")但當時規定只許伴侶這樣做，為此漢素進行了變性手術，卻在中途出了意外，令他成為了一個不男不女的無性人。("Angry Inch")

儘管如此他還是順利的來到了美國並改名希域，開始了一段生活。好景不常，才一年盧化便離開了他。("Wig in a Box")他試了好幾份工作，並嘗試發展自己的樂隊。他找到了一群韓戰留下來的妻子以及另一女人型以撤，還有一個怕羞的小伙子名叫湯美。希域寫的第一首歌讓他開展了新的旅程，("Wicked Little Town")他和湯美之間的感情亦越來越親密　－　直至湯美因不能接受其性別而離開，("The Long Grift")還拿了希域作的歌來讓自己成為名星之後。希域悲痛欲絕，("Hedwig's Lament")一時之間他心情跌至低點，("Exquisite Corpse")而湯美則名成利就。("Wicked Little Town (Reprise)")

但湯美盜用別人的歌曲來使自己成名始終被人發現了，之後湯美亦捲進了一件車禍之中。湯美並無大礙，但亦被逼公開這位名不見經傳的作曲家給公眾，此時湯美和希域彷彿成為了同一個人，向自己的觀眾們表演。希域把假髮遞給以撤，並將他由自己之中解放出來，至於希域　－　則只有繼續留在自己的音樂以及樂隊之中。("Midnight Radio")

john directed, wrote and starred in the film hedwig and the angry inch (2001). he directed shortbus (2006) and rabbit hole (2010) which gave nicole kidman a best actress oscar nomination. john executive-produced jonathan caouette's documentary tarnation (2004) and has created music videos for scissor sisters and bright eyes. he’s presently adapting neil gaiman’s how to talk to girls at parties for the screen as well as producing dash shaw’s animated feature shell game with howard gertler.
