Nach dem Tode ihres Vaters flieht die 20-jährige, technikbegeisterte Lena Berkow im Nachkriegsdeutschland der 50er Jahre mit ihrer Mutter Hilde und ihrer jüngeren Schwester Betty aus dem zerbombten Berlin auf einen fränkischen Bauernhof. Dort verliebt sie sich in den „schweigsamen Bauernsohn Walter Juskowiak“, mit dem sie gemeinsam von einer Zukunft im fernen Amerika träumt.
