贝托尔特·布莱希特(1898-1956)是德国著名的剧作家、戏剧理论家、导演、诗人。布莱希特一生剧作超过五十部，而唯一一部让他倾注近二十年心血去创作、修改、并排演的剧目就是《伽利略》。1938年底，慕尼黑协定签署后几个月，布莱希特深受当时被他称为“黑暗的时代”的触动，仅用三周就完成了《伽利略的一生》——也就是《伽利略》的第一版。1945-47年间，布莱希特费尽周折，在流亡美国期间把经过大幅修改的第二版《伽利略》搬上洛杉矶和纽约的舞台。1956年布莱希特逝世前的几个月，他仍在执导柏林人剧团排演由英文翻译成德文、并经过修改的第三版。从其时间跨度、思想深度、和戏剧成就等方面来看，《伽利略》堪称布莱希特最伟大的作品之一。同时这也是布莱希特史诗剧的代表作，是他戏剧生涯中的重要转折点。
　　此次创作的《伽利略》是1945年英文版首次被译成中文并被搬上舞台。
