"1923" depicts the Rocky Mountains in the early twentieth century, a time when they were plagued by pandemics, historic droughts, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression, and introduces a new generation of the Duttons who call that region home.

破烂废墟堆成的垃圾山，充满了神圣的仪式感。在垃圾山的最顶点，诡异地竖着一枚巨蛋。未过多久，巨蛋开始摇晃，一只模样怪异的黑鸟破壳而出。它警惕地扫视着周围的世界，随后用木棍在山顶搭起了房屋。另一座垃圾山山顶，青绿的苹果尖刺腐烂，可怕而恶心的尖刺滋生出来，最终诞生的是鸟的爪子。它也照例改好了木屋，并如前者那样配备了无线电系统。两个木屋相互发射着信号，演奏不知名的音乐，争夺电波唯一的接收者——收音机的控制权。为了占据绝对优势，大楼越造越高。
