Als naiver aber stets korrekter Buchhalter plagt Pipin die Eifersucht. Seine Frau hat offenbar ein Verhältnis mit einem Sänger, der zur Untermiete bei ihnen wohnt. So bleibt es nicht aus, dass er in seiner Nervosität einem Geldboten 300 Mark zuviel auszahlt. Als er den Fehler bemerkt, ist es zu spät. Pipin fürchtet um seinen gutbürgerlichen Ruf und seinen Arbeitsplatz und setzt alle Hebel in Bewegung, um das Geld zurückzubekommen. Unbeholfen und planlos, wie er dabei vorgeht, steht er schon bald im Mittelpunkt eines inszenierten öffentlichen Skandals um eine prominente Sängerin und hat nun alle Hände voll zu tun auch noch seine von seiner Unschuld überzeugen zu müssen.
