Lily is in love, but with a man she has never seen. She and Erich both work as switchboard operators, she in Paris, he in Berlin. They talk to each other every day and now they are hopelessly in love. Finally, they decide to meet up in Paris. Lily has a photograph of Erich and so is surprised when the man who meets her at the station looks nothing like the man she had been expecting. Not realising that the man is an impostor, Lily allows herself to be courted by him. Meanwhile, Erich has mistaken another woman, Annette, for Lily, and ends up seeing far more than he expected to on a first date. The weekend adventure over, Lily and Erich return to their humdrum lives, only to be dismissed by their employers for their unorthodox method of cementing Franco-German relations over the phone. Just when all seems lost, Fate conspires to bring the two young lovers together...

Drawing heavily on the poignant novel by Jules Renard on which it is based, Poil de carotte is a modest yet appealing film which has stood the test of time mainly because of the quality of its acting performances and its inherent humanity. It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier’s earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.
The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.

Two clubmen discuss the occult, introducing three weird tales: 1) Plain, bitter Henrietta secretly loves law student Michael. Then on Mardi Gras night, a mysterious stranger gives her a mask of beauty that she must return at midnight. 2) At a party, palmist Podgers makes uncannily accurate predictions, later telling skeptic Marshal Tyler that he will murder someone. The notion obsesses Tyler, with ironic consequences. 3) High wire artist Gaspar dreams of falling, then loses his nerve. He recognizes Joan from his dreams, and falls for her. Will any of his dreams, involving Joan and disaster, come true?

Le Mystère de la Tour Eiffel is a spectacular adventure film by French director Julien Duvivier (Pépé le Moko, La Belle Equipe). It tells the story of the naive circus artist Achilles Saturnin whose business partner steals his papers, poses as him and causes Saturnin to miss out on a huge inheritance. When members of the crime syndicate Ku Klux Eiffel also set their sights on the fortune, Saturnin seems doomed. But then Saturnin decides to challenge the hoodlums; a series of daredevil exploits on top of the Eiffel Tower follows.
The adventurous character of the film is indisputable. But in fact, Le Mystère de la Tour Eiffel is much more than just an adventure film. Rather, it’s a combination of several genres so that there is something for everybody: There is (of course!) a love story between Achilles and a cute artist named Sylvanie. There are elements of social drama, e.g. when Achilles loses his job because his twins-act is nothing without his partner who disappeared and so Achilles hungers. It is a detective film, contains allusions to historical groups/ events (the Ku-Klux-Clan), artistic styles (cubism) and it hints (self reflexive) at the fairground-roots of the cinema by integrating fairground motifs in the story (e.g. a haunted house chair on with Achilles drives tied up through the Rochenoire Castle, the shadow play that illustrated the nightmare of the fraud) and by laying the starting point of the plot in the fair environment. Most notably Le Mystère de la Tour Eiffel has a strong comedy tendency of slapstick that runs through the whole film. There are a lot of small gags and effects that make Duvivier’s film and its hero loveable and show the filmmaker's sense for detail.
