Informed by primary source material, the six-part series is set in 18th Century Covent Garden - the centre of London's vice trade. It follows the fortunes of Henry and John Fielding - brothers, magistrates of London and the men who created the modern police force.
Henry Fielding (the man we know as the father of the English novel) and John Fielding (his half-blind brother) are London's first real 'cops' - investigating the lives and crimes of prostitutes, pimps, gamblers and villains (all meticulously researched real characters) who operate in a world where the rules of policing have not yet been invented. Making up the 'procedure' as they go along, the Fieldings invent many of the standard systems of policing today including taking witness statements and creating an organised system of informants.
Following the evolution of the capital's police force, City of Vice exposes the steamier side of life in 18th Century London. Also featuring Geraldine James, Nigel Harman, Juliet Aubrey and Frances Magee. BBC版的《维兰德》是这部瑞典小说首次改编成英语电视剧。但是故事仍然是设定在瑞典的于斯塔德。而且剧组也是奔赴瑞典拍摄完成的。主角是肯尼思·布拉纳（《我与梦露的一周》中饰演奥利弗爵士，《哈利·波特与密室》中饰演黑魔法防御课老师吉德罗·洛哈特教授，还是《雷神》的导演）。他把维兰德人到中年的困窘、对受害者感同身受的同情、和内心的挣扎表演得细致入微、丝丝入扣。配角们的表演也都十分精彩。其中，汤姆·希德勒斯顿（《雷神》中饰演洛基）在剧中饰演了维兰德手下的心腹警探。第一季第一集中，尼古拉斯·霍尔特（《皮囊》《X战警 第一课》）还扮演了一个饱受父亲家暴折磨的男孩。
