19世纪60年代，英国女教师Anna Leonowens受聘担任暹罗国王所有孩子的私人教师，随后她将自己的经历记录下来，由Margaret Landon整理后，以传记小说形式出版。小说取得巨大成功，在20世纪上半叶先后改编成话剧和电影。1951年，百老汇音乐剧黄金组合R&H，Richard Rodgers和Oscar Hammerstein II将此改编为音乐剧，成为两人又一经典力作。剧中的名曲包括“I Whistle a Happy Tune”、“I Have Dreamed”、“We Kiss in a Shadow”等。此后在百老汇和伦敦都多次被复排，其中1996年复排版获托尼奖最佳复排音乐剧奖，1985年原版国王的扮演者Yul Brynner，因这一经典角色获托尼奖特别大奖。
