I think I might like the suspiciously similar Corbucci/Nero/Palance 1970 follow-up COMPAÑEROS just a hair better than this one, but I enjoyed the love/politics triangle with Nero/Musante/Ralli as a very different take on the Good/Bad/Ugly formula.

I can definitely quibble with the history being presented here (and the film definitely soft-pedals the Earps' less-savory activities as lawmen/pimps) but if you go in expecting to see the legend instead, you can't do much better than this.

Oh man, what fun. Song Kang-ho's character really made this one for me, but the sheer kineticism of the direction and the perfection of the early 20th-century Manchurian setting for this kind of story makes me wonder why "Korean western" isn't a whole genre by now.

MANNVANUARY THREE, #9:
A fantastic and involving mix of '60s social realism with the stylishness of the French New Wave. Reminded me a great deal of Linklater's Before films, and I have to imagine it's an influence on them in terms of seeing a relationship between two characters build in what feels like real time.

MANNVANUARY THREE, #4:
I was pleasantly surprised by the mix of melodrama and genuine mythical storytelling in this one. I picked up on the obvious parallels to King Lear right away, but there's also a certain self-awareness in how this movie wrestles with its dramatic tropes that makes it very fresh and surprising at times.
