埃宾曾采用传统的临床精神病学方法，搜集各种性变态行为的病例，对它们加以系统的组织和分类。自1886年发表以来，直到1902年埃宾去世，该书每年都会再版。
《性心理疾病》的成功使埃宾本人从一个不显眼的神经科专家，被提升为维也纳大学的精神病学教授和精神病院院长，并成为当时精神病学研究的权威专家。更具有社会意义的是，该书标志着医学对人类性生活的干预的开始，打破了基督教会在该方面的垄断地位。本片就是从书中摘录部分拍摄而成的，描写了梦幻般的世纪之交的性变态行为。
