不知火検校に弟子入りしている按摩の杉の市は、子供の時から悪事に関しては異常な才能を持っていた。ある日鈴カ森で癪に悩む旅人に出会った杉の市は、彼が大金を持っていると知ると巧みに殺害した。偶然これを目撃していた生首の倉吉に脅迫されると、儲けは山分けとばかり即座に大金を与えた。その気っぷに惚れ込んだ倉吉は、江戸での再会を約しその時の証拠として自分の掛守を渡した。杉の市はその掛守を死人の手に握らせて立ち去るという狡猾さだった。江戸に帰った杉の市が、ある晩治療に行った先の材木屋へ殺人強盗が入った。それが生首の倉吉とその親分にあたる丹治、弟の玉太郎達であったのを幸いに、儲けの分け前を要求するとともに材木屋とその妾のおすみの妹を親切ごかしに我が家に引取り、彼女を無理矢理に犯してしまった。おきみはその晩自殺した。ある時旗本の岩井藤十郎の奥方浪江が夫に内密で五十両の金の必要に迫られ、不知火検校に金策を頼みこんできた。検校に断りの使いを命じられ、杉の市は、自分が代って立替えると言い、毎日五両ずつ貸すから十日間通えと言うのだった。その度に杉の市は浪江を抱いた。しかし、これは夫の藤十郎にばれ、彼女は自害した。これを知った杉の市は自殺を装って藤十郎の目をごまかし、しかも証文を倉吉に渡して借金の取り立てを忘れなかった。悪事の数々を重ねた杉の市は丹治と玉太郎を使い、師匠を殺害、みずから二代目不知火検校を襲名した。そして五年、二代目不知火検校として羽振りをきかせ、豊国の一枚絵になったおはんを金の力で妻にしていた。そのおはんに房五郎という情夫があることを勘づいた検校は二人を殺した。その頃、倉吉が奉行に捕われた。倉吉は検校との悪事のかずかずを自白した。検校の屋敷に町方が向かった。そして岩井藤十郎も--一方検校は数日後には獄門台に上る身とは露ほども思わず将軍家姫君の治療を仰せつかってその幸運に酔っていた。
