《薄伽梵歌》是印度古代史诗《摩诃婆罗多》（Mahabharata）中的一部宗教哲学诗。因此，在阅读《薄伽梵歌》之前，先要了解一下《摩诃婆罗多》。《摩诃婆罗多》的成书年代约在公元前四世纪至公元四世纪，历时八百年。它以口头方式创作和传诵，不断扩充内容，层层累积而成，最后定型的篇幅达到"十万颂"（每颂一般为三十二个音节），译成汉语约四百万字。
《摩诃婆罗多》全诗共分十八篇，以印度列国纷争时代的社会为背景，叙述了婆罗多族两支后裔俱卢族和般度族争夺王位继承权的斗争。
象城的持国和般度是两兄弟。持国天生眼瞎，因而由般度继承王位。持国生有百子，长子难敌。般度生有五子，长子坚战。这便是伟大的婆罗多族的两支后裔，前者称为俱卢族，后者称为般度族。不久，般度死去，由持国摄政。坚战成年后，理应继承父亲的王位。但难敌不答应，企图霸占王位，纠纷从此开始。
