Starring Steve Buscemi as director Nick Reve, LIVING IN OBLIVION highlights a day on the set of Nick's film where everything that could possibly go wrong, actually does. 随着时代的发展，《老娘舅》本着与时俱进的宗旨，不断改版、更新，先后经历了弄堂篇、家庭篇、社区篇、儿孙篇，在留住老观众的同时吸引了更多的年轻观众，成为一个常办常新的栏目。
（一）弄堂篇
1995年9月创办海派喜剧集锦《百家心·老娘舅系列》。该剧以石库门居民区为背景，以上海市民生活的变化和矛盾为创作素材，以“老娘舅”这个在江南地区倍受人们尊敬和热爱的人物为偶像载体，实景拍摄，两周一集。播出后，收视率直线上升，超过了同期许多优秀的电视剧。
（二）家庭篇
为扩大节目影响，在上海本地形成一个能与北派《我爱我家》等情景剧抗衡的上海方言喜剧，1998年7月，一个直接以“老娘舅”命名，以其家里老中青三代人为主体的海派室内喜剧《老娘舅》应运而生，节目一经播出，立即在上海荧屏上形成一股小旋风，收视率更是创下了23.61%的纪录。
（三）邻居篇
本世纪初，改革开放使上海的城市面貌发生了巨大的变化，所谓一年一个样，三年大变样，大批新颖的社区拔地而起。为了反映上海城市日新月异的变化，因此，《老娘舅》与时俱进，改名为《老娘舅和邻居们》，2000年7月改版播出，收视率名列前茅。[]
（四）儿孙篇
2002年10月，进入新世纪的上海更呈现出勃勃生机，播出八年的《老娘舅》由于观众的厚爱，毅然再度扩容改版，由每周一集改为每周两集，改版使《老娘舅》更具年青、时尚、新闻、娱乐的特征。于是，一个全新的《老娘舅和儿孙们》的海派室内喜剧即刻呈现在观众面前，依旧得到观众的欢迎并保持了8%（AC尼尔森）的高收视率。
2006年，应广大电视观众的要求，《老娘舅》进行了扩版，由每周两集增加到每周五集。在保持原有特点同时，进一步强调节目的年轻化与国际化。具体表现在节目名称改为《老娘舅的儿孙们》，重点将落在老娘舅那些长大成人的儿孙们身上。除保留故事原有重要人物外，将吸收大量年轻、有潜力的演员如戏剧学院表演艺术专业的学生，沪剧院、越剧院的年轻花旦，力捧他们成为新一代《老娘舅》的偶像，创作重点也不仅仅在邻里间的家长里短，而是更多的关注年轻一代的工作、生活以及与外界的交流。
可以这么说，《老娘舅》的变化可以从一个侧面看出上海在前进，反映了改革开放、城市建设带给上海人民的改变。与时俱进使《老娘舅》这个节目成为海派室内喜剧中的常青树。
