The show follows the epic journey of the monk Tang Sanzang and his three disciples-Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), Zhu Bajie (Pigsy), and Sha Wujing (Sandy)-as they travel westward in search of Buddhist scriptures.

本剧于1989年的10月13号开拍，第1期只拍了两集，约于1990年春节左右在小地方电视台 1套黄金时间播出，也只播出过1次，未曾 重播，因而许多观众并未看过。 原方案要拍20集，因资金或其余方面的缘由被迫中断，只拍成4集，且后2集由游本昌自掏腰包才得以拍摄完成。
剧中主角济公仍由出名表演艺术家游本昌饰演，参与上演的还有北影的著名演员黄宗洛、管仲祥、臧金生、徐美玲、吕文铮等。京剧院导演孙桂元担当施行导演，还在戏里串演了两个角色。

儿童编导夏东海（高亚麟 饰）离婚后带着儿子夏雨（尤浩然 饰）回国发展，与在国内长大的女儿夏雪（杨紫 饰）团聚了。后来夏东海跟某医院护士长刘梅（宋丹丹 饰）结婚了，刘梅也是离婚了独自带着儿子刘星（张一山 饰）生活。这个一家5口的重组家庭，夫妻两人都非常关心孩子们的健康成长，但教育方式的不同，而且孩子们都十分调皮捣蛋，闹出了不少令人捧腹大笑却又让人深思的故事。
