30年代的北京城，京戏班启用的全部是男演员。程蝶衣（余家伦 饰）和段小楼（岳华 饰）自小就一起跟着京戏师傅学艺，程蝶衣出演旦角，段小楼演生角。二人配合出演《霸王别姬》一戏，由于程蝶衣入戏太深，陷入剧中虞姬一角无法自拔，深深爱上了饰演项羽的段小楼。但是，段小楼却爱上了女子菊仙，使得程蝶衣悲愤而嫉妒，无法控制。为了摆脱这份情感纠葛，程蝶衣最终选择了跟随富商袁四爷，作为其入幕之宾。随后，文化大革命爆发，二人终没有摆脱被批斗的命运。几经周折，二人最后在香港再次相遇……

本艷情片為李翰祥編導，由兩個單元故事組成。首個故事講述柳宣教(姜南 飾)策劃了一個破玉通禪師(岳華 飾)「色戒」之奇計，著美艷妓女紅蓮(余莎莉 飾)向玉通大施色誘攻勢。第二個故事講述少女馮玉華(邵音音 飾)之母馮孫氏(陳萍 飾)欠下九尾狐(王萊 飾)一筆錢無法償還，被逼做妓女還債。後馮孫氏因性病死去，遺下一筆債務以及殮葬費須玉華償還；玉華無奈，只好踏上母親所走過之路……

曾两度获得香港电影金像奖最佳导演奖的尔冬升，七十年代邵氏成为演员，曾演出《三少爷的剑》和《表错七日情》等，1986年首次执导《癫佬正传》。而这部《魔界》，则是1982年由《现代豪放女》杨权执导，邵氏小生尔冬升、岳华、台湾着名女演员刘雪华、汤镇业、卢远和许桂香主演，题材是有关警花着了魔，她所发的子弹能转弯射杀歹徒的离奇荒诞经历。
《魔界》故事内容讲述郑忠(尔冬升饰)和王丽芬(刘雪华饰)一对情侣隶属于同一个警察局。某一日，他们同往离岛露营，在半夜时王丽芬忽闻异声，离营查看，忽见绿光一闪，随即着魔。郑忠好梦正浓，不知怪情发生。王丽芬隔日上班，王帮办和女警员们开会研讨案件。王丽芬恍然若失，众人以为王丽芬昨晚在露营时玩乐过度，未生疑心。突然接报某地发生挟持人质案件，王帮办率众赶往现场，并与匪徙对歭。王丽芬不听王帮办部署迳自行开枪，开枪的经过却被记者发现，她的子弹能转向杀人！

包得成（岳華）精技擊，以幪面盜身份劫富濟貧，與官府作對！偵緝處長馬步雲之子千里（陳鴻烈）工心計，設計誘捕包，其間戀上表妹王丹萍（李菁），但王已許身於醫生李大偉（何藩），千里竟設計捕下李，並欲殺之以圖獨得王；包往營救，反遭逮捕。幸包助手蕭忠（吳家驤）入獄接濟武器，包當晚即將李救出，逃獄成功。其後，包假冒保安司令妾侍孔雀（于倩）的姨父，混入保安司令家，結果將群醜盡殲，為民間除害，最後，包更護送王與李會面，再飄然離去！

黑道高手沈盾夫妇盗得武林大侠高允的翠凤剑，带着女儿沈冰红逃往深山。不久，高允与结拜兄弟葛鸿、童洪、西门冲追至深山，因沈盾不肯交出宝剑，便将夫妇俩杀死，此刻沈冰红抱着宝剑藏在山洞中，目睹父母被杀。待高允等人离去，她的双脚已受冻致残，被两位武林异人救起。20年后，沈冰红练得非凡武艺，矢志为父母报仇。一日她盗得葛鸿的金丝爪，却受到4名大汉的围攻，幸得高允的次子高天英搭救脱险。在高允寿诞之时，她用翠凤剑杀死葛鸿和西门冲。高允见状怜其身世和残废之驱，愿意为她治好脚疾，她刺伤高允逃离。大英兄弟为了替沈冰红疗疾，愿意带她到冰田热泉去，并愿为她到火山去取离火珠，此事引起童洪父女的不满。当沈冰红和高天威历尽艰辛到达冰田疗疾时，童洪也赶来，天威迎战童洪；沈冰红把救命的离火珠交给天威，自己冻死在冰田里。

Golden Swallow is a fighter-for-hire who has been contracted by the local government to retrieve the governor's kidnapped son. Holding him is a group of rebels who are demanding that their leader be released from prison in return for the captured son. After a brief encounter with the gang at a local restaurant, Golden Swallow is joined by an inebriated wanderer Drunken Cat who aids her in her mission.

Three inmates in an asylum tell their stories. Story 1, a husband and wife discover they should be careful what they wish for. Story 2, a naked female ghost gets revenge from her watery grave. Story 3, a dead prostitute returns as a ghost.

A treasure hunt sparks the continuing violence in this Hong Kong action film, yet the film does not focus only on the violent nature of some of the characters. An enamored Ting Tien (Pai Piao) spends a cold winter's night waiting to spot the love of his life, Ling Shuang-hua (Szu Shih), when she makes her usual morning excursion onto her balcony. Despite Kuang Hsu's enthronement as the last reigning Emperor of China, his ability to rule effectively is overshadowed by the ever-present power of the Dowager Empress. When his attempts to reform the Imperial system are thwarted by the Dowager Empress, he attempts to curb her power. His efforts are not successful, and this failure leads directly to his own death and the end of Imperial rule in China. The Dowager Empress, though, ends her days comfortably and in peace.
