A disillusioned filmmaker has an encounter with a young woman who has a ritual of repeating "Tomorrow is my birthday" everyday. He tries to communicate with her through his video camera.

Lt. Koji Kitami is a navigator-bombardier in Japan's Naval Air Force. He participates in the Japanese raid on the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor in 1941 and is welcomed with pride in his hometown on his return. As Japan racks up victory after victory in the Pacific War, Kitami is caught up in the emotion of the time and fights courageously for the standard of Japanese honor. But his assuredness of his government's righteousness is shaken after the Japanese navy is defeated in the debacle of Midway.

昭和十五年。考古学者本郷直樹は次男の真二が自分と同じく学問の道を志すことを喜んでいた。兄の英一は父の意に反して海軍少尉になっていた。一方、船大工の小田切武市は一人息子の正人が海軍兵学校に合格したので有頂点になっていた。十八年間海軍に勤めても下士官止りの武市は正人の将来は約束されたと信じて疑わなかった。一年が過ぎた。世界情勢は日毎に緊迫の色を強め、戦争の予感は現実のものになろうとしていた。昭和十六年十二月八日、早期和平を強調する山本五十六のもとで、連合艦隊は、ハワイ真珠湾に奇襲をかけた。次々と炎上する米海軍の戦艦群を、英一は興奮の面持ちで見つめていた。その頃、五年の歳月と建艦技術の粋を集めた空前総後の巨艦、大和が完成した。山本はアメリカに時間を与えず、早期和平に持ち込もうと、ミッドウェイ作戦に賭けた。しかし、作戦は失敗に終り、戦局は消耗戦へと展開していった。数々の戦闘を体験している英一は、死を覚悟し、婚約者の陽子と式を挙げたが、指一本触れずに戦場へもどった。やがて大学生の真二も召集され兵学校を卒業した正人も武市の意に反して零戦に乗る決意をしていた。日本軍は劣勢に回り、起死回生のレイテ作戦に出た。英一は戦場で真二と出会った。陽子への仕打ちをなじる真二に「陽子を頼む」と遺書を残して英一は大空に散った。英一の残したライフ・ジャケットのために沈む船から脱出した真二は、生きる喜びをあらためて知り、陽子と生きようと陸上勤務を志願するが、大和への転属を命ぜられる。死を目前にして真二は陽子を抱けなかった兄の気持を初めて理解した。陽子は逆だった。愛する人に抱かれたい。陽子は真二に激しく体をぶつけるのだった。同じ頃、正人は特攻を志願していた。武市は息子の出世に固執し兵学校へ行かせた己の浅薄さを呪い戦争の恐しさを痛感した。戦況は挽回の余地もない所まで来ていた。そしてついに、最後の切札、大和の沖縄への水上特攻が計画されるに至った。大和は出撃した。真二も正人もその中にいた。そして、陽子、武市、多くの肉親を残して、大和艦上の戦士たちはその命を沈めていった。

Based on the "2.26 Incident", an attempted coup d'état in Japan 1936, launched by radical ultra-nationalist parts of the military. Several leading politicians were killed and the center of Tokyo was briefly held by the insurgents before the coup was suppressed.
