这本《宗教与科学》，是罗素1935年的作品。出版的当时，就颇引人注目，到五六十年代，已多次再版，仍很风行。在罗素去世十年之后，再来读一读它，还是饶有兴味。 罗素是众所周知的唯心主义哲学家，但他不信上帝，对宗教神学持否定态度，他是一个非宗教主义者。罗素在这本书中，历述了自文艺复兴以来，科学与神学的冲突和斗争，每次斗争的结局，总是科学战胜神学。宗教虽然始终不渝地为神学辩护，但它在科学进步面前，不得不一步一步退却，为上帝存在的论证不得不一次又一次地进行修饰和补缀。罗素的文采是负有盛名的，他的文章写得深刻而生动，机智又雄辩，他批判宗教神学的一些文章，很可以借用来作无神论宣传的材料。商务印书馆最近还出版了罗素另一本批判宗教的书：《为什么我不是基督教徒》，这是一本文集，收集了罗素从二十年代至五十年代的十五篇文章，和《宗教与科学》可以参照阅读，对罗素的非宗教思想会有更全面的了解。列宁主张利用十八世纪老无神论者的作品，对千百年来深受宗教愚弄的群众，进行无神论的宣传教育，看来唯心主义哲学家批判宗教神学的书，也不是不可以利用。我们对罗素这本书抱有兴趣，主要也在此。
当然，罗素终究是唯心主义者，他对宗教神学的批判是不彻底的。罗素对宗教辩护者提出的“科学是不够的”、“科学不讲价值”一类说法，承认是对的，罗素说，“价值”问题确实不属科学探讨的范围，而且他还进一步说，“价值”问题首先不是知识范围的问题，因而它不是凭理智可以解决的。在罗素看来，科学只讲真伪，不管善恶，涉及“价值”一类伦理问题，是没有客观标准的。人们对价值持不同的看法，和人们对食物有不同的口味一样。既然科学管不了“价值”、“善恶”一类伦理问题，在这些问题上没有客观标准，也就是说伦理学不能成为一门科学，那么，宗教就有存在的余地和必要了。在这一点上，罗素和康德一样，限定知识的范围，给信仰留下地盘。罗素对科学的进步，持悲观主义的看法，虽然他肯定科学每战胜神学一步，就给人类带来一分幸福，减少人的“天生野蛮性”，但科学的发展，也给人类带来残杀手段更为厉害的战争灾祸，而且发展的趋势，将是愈演愈烈。人们在战争灾祸面前，遇到许多伦理方面的问题，这是科学本身解决不了的问题，因此，在这一点上，科学又恰恰给宗教的存在创造了条件。罗素还认为，科学发展的本身，就向科学的决定论提出了挑战。他指的是量子力学关于微观粒子在特定情况下可以自由选择运动方向的问题，微观粒子的运动的不确定性使决定论在论证上出了漏洞，给意志自由论和宇宙目的论的论证开了方便之门。罗素认为，在理论上对决定论和意志自由论都可以驳难，各自在理论上的论证都不能自圆其说，因此，罗素说这二者都是形而上学，都不是科学可以证实的问题。显然，这样又给宗教留有余地。
