'The Adventure of The Second Stain' is a Sherlock Holmes short story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, best known for his novel 'The Hound of the Baskervilles.' It is one of 13 stories in the cycle collected as 'The Return of Sherlock Holmes.' Doyle ranked 'The Adventure of the Second Stain' eighth in a list of his twelve favorite Sherlock Holmes short stories.

Lord Bellinger, the Prime Minister, and Trelawney Hope, the Secretary for European Affairs, come to see Sherlock Holmes about the matter of a document stolen from Hope's dispatch box which he kept at home in Whitehall Terrace when not at work. A very serious matter. If divulged, this document could bring about very dire consequences for all of Europe, even war. They are loath to tell Holmes at first the exact nature of the document, but eventually feel that they must tell him that it was a rather injudicious letter from a foreign potentate. It disappeared from the dispatch box one evening when Hope was out for four hours. No-one in the house knew about it, not even the Secretary's wife with whom he does not discuss his work.

It's London, 1907. Journalist Edward Malone, rejected by the woman he loves because he is too prosaic, decides to go in search of adventure and fame to prove himself worthy of her. Soon after, he meets Professor George Challenger, a scientist who claims to have discovered a 'lost world' populated by pterodactyls and other prehistoric monsters.

Arthur Conan Doyle famously killed off Sherlock Holmes in 1893, in the short story 'The Final Problem', but was tempted to bring him back to life ten years later, in the thirteen tales that comprise The Return of Sherlock Holmes.

While the outcry that supposedly followed Holmes' death was mostly apocryphal (the claim that readers wore black armbands in mourning has been frequently cited but never actually proved), by 1893 there was a substantial readership for Holmes' two series of adventures published in the Strand Magazine and two earlier novels. Doyle returned to Holmes in 1901-2 with The Hound of the Baskervilles, a novel set before the events of 'The Final Problem'; the commercial success of the serialisation in the Strand led Doyle to consider reviving the Holmes stories on a longer-term basis. Accordingly, in 1903 Doyle was contracted by the American magazine Collier's Weekly to supply six more Holmes stories; the agreement was extended to six more, with a final extension for a thirteenth story ('The Second Stain') that Doyle (mistakenly) believed to be the closing episode of the Holmes adventures. These thirteen tales make up this volume.

Holmes and Watson are visited by a very conservative gentleman asking for guidance. He's Mr. John Scott Eccles. He'd spent the previous night at Wisteria Lodge, Aloysius Garcia's rented house, but when he woke in the morning, he found that Garcia and his servants had all disappeared. He was alone in an empty house.

Eccles met Garcia, a Spaniard, through an acquaintance; they seemed to form an unlikely friendship right away. When Eccles got to Wisteria Lodge, he could tell though that something was amiss. Garcia seemed distracted and the whole mood was quite sombre. And then one of Garcia's servants handed him a note -- and the man's mood became even darker.

Not more than a few minutes behind Eccles, the Surrey police arrive at 221B Baker Street to report the suspicious death of Garcia and caution him about his potential arrest.
