Following the success of 2014’s Birdman (Winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director), director Alejandro G. Iñárritu pushes the limits of film making with the survival epic The Revenant. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, Wolf of Wall Street), Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dark Knight Rises) and shot in the frozen Canadian wilderness with only natural lighting, The Revenant is a story of loss, revenge and resilience in the face of impossible odds against the furies of man and nature itself. The film is heavily favored to be a critical darling as awards season gets under way. Director Iñárritu has chosen to forgo almost all dialogue in favor of a gorgeous soundscape and a sweeping score. A film of this magnitude deserves a composer who understands creative artistry and unbridled passion. Japanese master and Oscar winner Ryuichi Sakamoto (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Last Emperor) fits the bill perfectly. Along with fellow Yellow Magic Orchestra member and frequent collaborator Alva Noto, Sakamoto has created a gripping soundtrack that is sure to be a treat for the winter crowds. Bryce Dessner (writer for Kronos Quartet and the LA Phil) also supplies additional music.

The Two Popes is a 2019 biographical drama film with Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce in lead roles as Pope Benedict XVI and Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio / Pope Francis respectively. Also starring Juan Minujín, Sidney Cole, Thomas D Williams, Federico Torre, Pablo Trimarchi. The film is based on Anthony McCarten’s 2017 play The Pope, written by Anthony McCarten and Frank Cottrell-Boyce, directed by Fernando Meirelles for Netflix.

Never before have classical and rock converged in such an organic, compelling and sensual way as they do in the three short orchestral works written by and featuring The National guitarist Bryce Dessner on his new release St. Carolyn by the Sea, performed with the Copenhagen Phil and conducted by Andree de Ridder.
Dessner presents three pieces of modern classical music, written from the perspective of a rock musician who is keenly aware of the raw emotional impact music any music can have on an audience. He draws on elements from Baroque and folk music, late Romanticism and modernism, minimalist music and the blues, among others, as well as referencing the work of such legendary figures as John Fahey, La Monte Young, Bela Bartook, Glenn Branca, Benjamin Britten, Morton Feldman, Philip Glass and Steve Reich. Despite this broad spectrum of influences, his voice remains individual and distinct.
With this album, which also showcases a suite drawn from Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwoods soundtrack for There Will Be Blood, Bryce Dessner and Jonny Greenwood open up a new frontier for symphonic music.

Impermanence/Disintegration places Grammy Award winning composer Bryce Dessner in partnership with the Australian String Quartet and Sydney Dance Company in constructing a dynamic, profoundly moving emotional response to the fleeting transience of life. Heavily influenced by the searing impact of the wildfires that devastated Australia late in 2019, Impermanence reflects on the mutability of the structures around us, both tangible and intangible.
The eponymous dance piece, featuring live on-stage performance of Dessner’s score, was originally planned to premiere in Sydney in March 2020. As the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic became apparent, the performances were cancelled, and artists sent into lockdown. Life, and recovery, was on hold but the collaboration persevered.
The ASQ recorded the compositions in lockdown, the dancers rehearsed in isolation, and with the added poignancy of a pandemic that has exposed so many vulnerabilities and changed us all at a profound level, Impermanence will finally take to the stage. Premiering on 17 February for a two week season in Sydney, Impermanence will be presented at the Adelaide Festival in March and then on an extensive Australian national tour.
37d03d is proud to partner with these artists to release the full-length album of Dessner’s works as performed by the Quartet. A collaboration with Anohni sees a new version of her timeless, and resonant, “Another World.” It closes the show, and the album, with great levity and hope.

A24 Music will release a soundtrack album for Mike Mills’ drama C’mon C’mon. The album features the film’s original score composed by Bryce Dessner (The Two Popes, Irresistible, The Kitchen) & Aaron Dessner (Cyrano, Transpecos, Big Sur). The soundtrack will be released digitally next Friday, November 12 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. A first track (I Won’t Remember?) will already be available to stream/download tomorrow and can also be checked out below. C’mon C’mon is written and directed by Mills and stars Joaquin Phoenix, Gaby Hoffmann and Woody Norman. The movie follows an artist left to take care of his precocious young nephew as they forge an unexpected bond over a cross country trip. The drama premiered at this year’s Telluride Film Festival and will be released in U.S. theaters on November 19 by A24.

Aaron Brooking Dessner (born April 23, 1976) is an American musician, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as a founding member of the rock band the National, with whom he has recorded nine studio albums; a co-founder of the indie rock duo Big Red Machine, teaming with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon; and a collaborator on Taylor Swift's studio albums Folklore and Evermore, both of which contended for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2021 and 2022, respectively, with the former winning the accolade.
