2004年夏天，行为艺术家李娃克，从北京赶来南阳，帮助画家王永平拍摄他的第一部电影．这部影片由王永平和朋友们出演自己的故事，这让整个拍片过程仿佛是他们过去生活的搬演．李娃克在拍片期间和诗人＂魔头贝贝＂，画家丁德福关系密切，他们常在一块谈论艺术．诗人＂魔头贝贝＂刚在网络上被评为＂天才诗人．但现实生活中他却是＂看门人＂，利用拍片空闲，他邀请李娃克，结伴做了一次＂逍遥游＂（The Transcendental Happiness Walk）．拜访外地的诗人． 丁德福现在很少绘画，在家庭，学校，情人的世俗纠葛中沉浮．这次他在影片中出演自己．他有时分不清生活和拍片的区别． 李娃克随时利用空闲做自己的行为艺术．这些作品有的是他给女孩子的脚化妆，然后将身上穿的寿衣剪下包裹脚；有的是他赤身裸体在人群中倒立．他说这些作品表达了他的生活感受――＂无聊＂． 剧组没钱，管理散乱，拍摄时断时续，使王永平深陷在焦虑之中．．．．．．． 这些人，在这个炎热的夏天继续着他们的＂梦游＂（Dream Walking）之旅．

A performance artist approaches a dais with a quiet formality, then proceeds to slowly and deliberately slice a series of cuts into her face with a razor. A doctoral student/filmmaker, under house arrest and constant surveillance, walks up to a vehicle following her and holds up a sign saying, “Shame to insult a woman.” Female factory workers describe being arrested and harassed when they stand up for their rights. Shot over eight years, OUTCRY AND WHISPER is a highly personal and sometimes uncomfortably intimate documentary chronicling women’s oppression and resistance in mainland China and Hong Kong. One remarkable and tumultuous sequence is shot in the midst of Hong Kong pro-democracy demonstrations.

The voices in this film are all conscientious citizens doing their utmost to improve the state of their nation. Their ethos is: “Where affairs of state are concerned, we cannot stand idly by and watch.” And yet the reward for their concern is a lifetime spent in political turmoil, years of periodic intimidation and surveillance. This film illustrates the perils of seeking freedom in a time of darkness, in a time when critique requires transformation. It depicts the harsh realities faced by three generations of activists—young, middle-aged and elderly– and allows us to better understand their anxieties, hopes, despairs and above all, their persistence.
