Adam, a misanthropist ex-hacker is suspected of sabotaging a famous happiness-research facility. He is forced to prove his innocence and stumbles into a wild adventure, during which he involuntarily becomes an idealistic activist, has to deal with strange, possibly supernatural rabbits and his crazy family - and regains a little belief in happiness. 故事讲述在一个威权体制（an authoritarian regime）逐渐瓦解的府邸（the palace）内，一年时间里发生的事情。

　　40岁的朱莉娅是一位事业有成的指挥家，她与伴侣格奥尔格一直渴望拥有自己的孩子。就在此时，维尔福特医生的出现为他们带来了希望。经过这位生育医生的成功治疗后，朱莉娅如愿以偿地怀孕了。
　　然而分娩过程完全偏离了预期——新生儿甫一落地就被立即带走，朱莉娅对发生的变故毫不知情。当终于被允许与孩子团聚时，她却感受到一种令人不安的疏离感。疑虑的种子在心中萌芽，她开始怀疑这个婴儿是否真是自己的骨肉。
