風雲をはらむ幕末、譲夷を叫ぶ旗本侍青木彌太郎は、役人や異人と結托して金儲けに狂奔する桑名屋を襲い、奪った千両箱を手土産にして新徴組に走った。ある日、水戸藩を脱藩した熱血青年の清水清次が、根岸の寮に吉原上りの愛妾おたつと住む彌太郎を訪ね、貪欲な父上月小藤太が不浄の金を集めていると打ち明けた。その夜、上月家に忍び入った彌太郎は、清次の妹妙の度胸と美しさに心を惹かれた。その頃、江戸城では老中総評議の結末、新徴組を江戸市中の讓夷派浪士取締りに任命した。そして、隊士の屯所が捕吏に囲まれ、危地に陥った彌太郎を救ったのはおたつだった。清次が異人を斬ったといって駈け込んだ日、彌太郎は朋友山岡鉄太郎と逢った。山岡は時勢の流れを説き、徳川を亡ぼすものは讓夷論だといったが、彌太郎は山岡を徳川の提灯持ちと罵って斬りつけた。だが横紙破りの彌太郎も、山岡の敵ではなかった。その後、妙を上月家に訪ねた彌太郎は、小藤太の奸計から捕吏に捕えられた。やがて、官軍が勝って、彌太郎は恩恵で釈放された。しかし、妙がすでに人妻になっていたことが、彌太郎をどのくらい落胆させたか知れない。失意の彌太郎は山岡に出逢い、料亭につれて行かれた。おたつがそこで女中をしていた。二人の生活が始まったが、彰義隊が上野にたてこもった日、彌太郎は遺書をのこして、戦火に身を投じた。深傷に倒れた彼は、おたつの腕に抱かれながら死んでいった。
