Plusieurs alpinistes tentent de gravir La Face de l'Ogre près de Chamonix. Leur point de départ est un petit hôtel de montagne d'où de nombreux touristes les observent. Parmi ceux-ci se trouve Hélène qui y séjourne depuis quelques semaines mais qui est exclue par les autres touristes. Puis elle fait la connaissance d'une fille de la ville nommée Marion et elles deviennent immédiatement amies. Elle lui dit qu'elle attend son mari qui a essayé de gravir la montagne et qui devrait revenir d'un jour à l'autre. Mais ensuite, le temps se gâte, ce qui entraîne le déclin de l'espoir mais rassemble également les femmes dans l'anxiété. Finalement le temps s'améliore et le mari de Marion revient mais pas celui d'Hélène et elle doit enfin accepter la vérité.
