一部給低估了的傑作，鑑於前作被指離經叛道，劉別謙改拍童話式故事，拍出令德國人瞠目結舌的格調與清新幽默感，論者認為它比《卡里加里醫生的密室》更應名垂青史（兩片其實是雙生兒，只是主角一個作惡一個行善）。不肯成長的男孩被叔父強迫娶妻，玩具大王借女兒的模樣造出機械公仔，演出一幕騙婚記，但竟弄假成真。幕開只見我們的導演跑出來，用紙板砌出人與物，接着疊現真實畫面。戲演下去，所有場景透視詭異，道具有時索性繪在牆上。全片優美且自由奔放，活像頑童開心炮製的藝術品。值得一看的還有德國默片女星奧茜奧華黛的傳奇身影。

戲名難免使人聯想到食色「性」也，但慾望的對象？對不起，卻是個男兒。美國蠔業大王有個刁蠻女，一天覺得自己非要嫁人不可，被媒人相中的落難歐洲王子派出心腹試探虛實，蠔女一聲多謝馬上拉去註冊結婚，當晚大排筵席，酒飽飯醉後只差沒半點洞房動機。直至窮王子真人現眼前，慾望傾瀉得一發不可收拾。女性情慾在劉別謙筆下從來都很坦然和直接，蠔女這荷里活女性原型，令後來者亦甘拜下風。揶揄資本家與消費社會的大場面可觀亦抵死，筆觸細膩幽默。劉別謙第二部長片，是他打造品牌之作，驚人的成熟導技令人擊節復感動。

故事发生在18世纪末法国首都巴黎。年轻貌美的女徒工让娜在一次偶然的机会认识了西班牙公使堂·迪埃戈并与其相好。让娜的男友阿芒德一气之下将迪埃戈刺死，自己被投入了监狱。此后，让娜先后成为杜巴瑞伯爵和国王路易十五的情妇，并向国王提出赦免阿芒德。出狱后的阿芒德参与了革命，最后革命群众冲垮了政权，并把让娜送上革命法庭受审。阿芒德因企图解救让娜而被处死，随后让娜也被送上断头台。

專題另一部默片來自德國的喜劇之王劉別謙，是他應美國傳奇女星瑪麗碧克馥之邀到荷里活執導的首部作品《風流歌女》（1923）。同是曲折的愛情故事，大師靈巧優雅的電影語言及自成一家的「劉別謙筆觸」，令美國觀眾為之傾倒。

Very entertaining silent film about cute, lively young Ossi, a tomboy full of a fun-loving spirit, she likes to smoke, drink booze, stick out her tongue, and play poker with her male chums - but her guardian and governess want her to behave like a "proper young lady". Wishing she were "born a boy" she heads to a local men's store and has herself fitted for an evening suit. Soon she's out on the streets in top hat, white tie, and tails, her hair groomed like a boy's, she rides the street car, and goes to a ballroom where she's soon drinking champagne and smoking cigars, flirting with (and even kissing) her own guardian - and he think's she's a fellow!
This film is full of charm and loads of fun, in many ways due to the delightful and well done performance given by Ossi Oswalda, a very likable young actress, totally tops in cute and charming! The DVD of this has a nice looking black and white print and includes an extremely appealing, lively piano score by Neil Brand that is the perfect accompaniment to this film.

The last of Lubitsch's silent sex comedies is exuberant, fanciful and teasingly elliptical at the same time. Since Paris is synonymous with sophistication and risqué romance, he deliberately cultivates the mood for love with an opening shot of a bed, subverting audience expectations of the obligatory Eiffel Tower. With equal subtlety, he gives his stock and trade subject of marital infidelities inventive treatment, wittily satirising "sheik fever" and other sex-oriented fads in the erotic masquerades between a doctor, his wife, his old flame and her husband. Unlike many Hollywood contemporaries, where sexual innuendoes serve only as evasions and euphemisms, in this film, they are bold announcements of the real thing.

Der Gelbe Schein was shot at the end of WW I in a partly Jewish neighbourhood in Warsaw, the so called Nalevsky-Quarters. Poland still was occupied by German troops at that time. Parts of the movie were filmed at the Ufa-Union-Ateliers in Berlin Tempelhof though.
Der Gelbe Schein was planned as propagandistic movie against the Russian Empire of the Czar. But it premiered not before the 22nd of November 1918 when the empire had collapsed already. Today Der Gelbe Schein is an early example of a movie featuring a studied woman as heroine while being in the same time the spectacular case of a German Propaganda-Film with a philosemitistic message.

Star Pola Negri and director Ernst Lubitsch, who created an international sensation with the German superproduction DuBarry, Woman of Passion, were reunited in the frothy Hollywood comedy/drama Forbidden Paradise. Negri is cast as Catherine, the Czarina of an unnamed but very Russian-looking country. Rescued from revolutionaries by dashing Captain Alexis Czerny (Rod LaRocque), Catherine "repays" the Captain in the boudoir. Czerny falls madly in love with the Czarina, only to discover that he is the latest in a long line of royal consorts. Angrily, he joins the rebellion, vowing to topple the monarchy (but promising that Catherine will remain unharmed). When the revolution fails, Czerny is sentenced to death, but Catherine rescinds the order and allows him a happily-ever-after with his true love, lady-in-waiting Anna (Pauline Starke). Adolphe Menjou, a favorite of Lubitsch's, has all the film's best scenes as a rakish chancellor. Based on a play by Lajos Biro and Melchoir Lengyel, Forbidden Paradise was remade in 1945 as A Royal Scandal, with Tallulah Bankhead as Catherine; the 1945 film was produced by Ernst Lubitsch, who fell ill during shooting and was forced to relinquish the directorial responsibilities to Otto Preminger. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
