Four female artists have been politicized by experiences with war, violence and suppression and integrated them into their work, using their most personal tool: their own bodies.

C. Boyle, and climate activist Luisa Neubauer, about things that kill their creativity. He notes that assassins lurk everywhere, be they in the form of money, fear, censorship, or bureaucracy. Ironically, however, these things can also foster creativity. Today in particular, the Anthropocene period threatens our very survival. This existential threat keeps us exploring new ideas. Creativity may be under threat, but it is often this very threat that drives it. In dialectically synthesizing opposites, Vaske is surprised to find that some reasons for a lack of creativity are themselves particularly creative.

Jay Z premiered his long-awaited visual for "Picasso Baby" on HBO August 2. The Mark Romanek-directed visual begins with Jay explaining the concept of the video and his thoughts on hip-hop as performance art."We're artists. We're cousins," he says. With the video he hopes he's "Bringing the worlds back together. I try not to have any expectations going into a performance."Set in a sparse room at Milk Studios in NYC, Jay walks into his performance space and is surrounded by fans, media personalities and notables. Inspired by Marina Abramovic's "The Artist Is Present" exhibit, select people take turns facing off with Hov as he raps to the "Picasso Baby" track.Covering the worlds of art, music and film, the cameos include "Macbeth" actor Alan Cumming, actress Taraji P. Henson, hip-hop personality Fab Five Freddy, writer Judd Apatow, several members from the cast of "Girls" like Adam Driver, rapper Wale, fashion designer Cynthia Rowley and actress Rosie Perez.Performance artist Marina Abramovic has the biggest cameo, engaging in several stare downs with Hov. "It was great. So much energy," she says after the shoot happens. She said in an interview that she hopes that rap fans will get interested in performance art after watching "Picasso Baby." "For me, it's very important that the rapper community and the Twitter [community] actually start Googling to understand what performance art is," she told NY Mag. "It's really important that I can shift the public from the one field [i.e., pop music] to the arts, which rarely happens. So, this was really a very meaningful thing."By the end of the video, the guest stars turn into a screaming throng of Hov fans, and the performance art becomes a recognizable rap show. Hov sums it up at the end. "Rap is pretty much thinking out loud...It's there for the world to see."

STATEMENT Here and now In the film Balkan Baroque, one has the impression that the character invents the past as she speaks, here and now. This past seems to have no reality outside the moment it is evoked with the force that is characteristic of film work. Here, in Balkan Baroque, it has become the present, the present of the film unwinding before the viewer's eyes. What we see on the screen is in the process of happening-it is the very gesture that is given to us and not a report on it. The universe of the film is given in a perpetual present. In other words, this biography of Marina Abramovic, which implies a number of past things, is in process of unfolding before our eyes, here and now, as we watch Balkan Baroque. 'Elsewhere' and 'formerly' do not exist. There is no longer a true reality, inherent and external to the film, so there is no longer anything but the sole reality of the projected images. The film, the universe that it reveals, suffices by itself, at every instant, erasing itself as it goes along, within a loop that is literally never-ending. We are therefore dealing with a subjective, mental unwinding. The work Balkan Baroque is not account of an exterior reality; it is its own reality. The only time to be considered for this biography is the projection time (63'). Balkan Baroque is pure fiction, an imaginary production in which Marina Abramovic plays different roles, including the role of the artist doing performances.
