Le 6 août 1945, trois B-29 décollent de l'île de Tinian, au milieu du Pacifique. Le bombardier Enola Gay transporte dans sa soute Little boy, une bombe atomique d'une puissance de 15 000 tonnes de TNT. Environ six heures après leur envol, la bombe est larguée sur la ville d'Hiroshima. La déflagration est gigantesque. Un souffle monstrueux ravage la cité. 90% des habitations sont endommagées ou détruites. En quelques secondes, 80 000 personnes périssent dans la fournaise atomique. Trois jours plus tard, le feu nucléaire s'abat sur la ville de Nagasaki. Des dizaines de milliers de Japonais sont anéantis. Le 15 août 1945, l'Empereur Hirohito annonce, enfin, que le Japon va déposer les armes. À l'origine, la bombe ne visait pas le Japon, mais l'Allemagne.
