Mr. Rossi and Mr. Capelli, co-owners of a successful traveling circus, have a rivalry over the affections of the lovely Dolores. That's all settled after Rossi is mauled to death by a lion. Years later a series of accidents, attacks and mysterious deaths plague the circus.

Winter 1942: Like thousands of other German soldiers, Asch and Vierbein have ended up at the Eastern front. Although Vierbein finds a new friend in Kowalski, the squadron commander captain Witterer, a true army veteran, gives them a really hard time. Witterer’s pointless orders reflect the bad habits of many former superiors. And again, Vierbein has to bear the brunt.

Ein deutsches TV-Drama

Der Film beruht auf dem gleichnamigen Roman von John Knittel aus dem Jahre 1934. Die Familientragödie spielt in den Bündner Alpen in der Via Mala in der Schweiz Ende der 1920er Jahre. Die Familie leidet unter dem tyrannischen und trinksüchtigen Vater Jonas Lauretz, der die Kinder schlägt, seine Frau misshandelt und sich an der ältesten Tochter vergreift. Seinen Sohn Niklaus hat er zum Krüppel geschlagen. Die Kinder beschließen, sich am Vater zu rächen. Gedreht wurde im Sommer und Herbst 1984 im Gasterntal im Berner Oberland. Das Wohnhaus und die Mühle wurden im unteren Teil des Tales in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Balmhornbach-Wasserfall aufgebaut, die Szenen in der „Via Mala“ wurden bei der Brücke in der engen Klus zwischen Tal und der Gemeinde Kandersteg gedreht.
