The story of two women, a mother and her daughter, who during the Cristero War set traps for government soldiers passing by their house, using seduction that was never consummated. The idea was to deceive the soldiers by making them feel safe, then hand them over, almost with their hands tied, to the Cristero guerrillas. But then one of the women, the daughter, truly falls in love with one of the soldiers, allows herself to be seduced by him, and then tries to save him, only to be killed, in the circumstances, by the soldier himself.

The legendary life of Mexican singer Lucha Reyes is the basis of this fictionalized biography ( or as director Arturo Ripstein puts it "an imaginary biography"). Lucha Reyes was an unconventional, and sexually liberated woman, most famous for her "cancion ranchera" style singing. Her story begins in 1939, where at 33 she still lived at home with her mother, Dona Victora, the madame of a renowned Mexico City whorehouse. Lucha marries the liberal Pedro Calderon and then buys a beggar's daughter. She becomes the mother to this child, Luzma. Lucha craves lasting love like junkies crave heroin. But for her loyal daughter, she never finds it and in the end no one can help her.

Family honor, greed, machismo, homophobia, and the dreams of whores collide in a Mexican town. It's owned by a man and his daughter: Manuelita is gay, aging, afraid; he cross-dresses and entertains as a flamenco dancer; he wants to sell and leave. His daughter wants to stay. The return of Pancho complicates things: he's a hothead Alejo tries to control and he scared Manuelita the year before. Things come to a head as Pancho breaks Alejo's hold on him, then flirts and dances with Manuelita and finds himself at risk of being called a "maricón."
