During the 1980s, the American journalist Edward Serotta documented the harsh realities and Jewish life in socialist Romania. The secret services clandestinely accompanied him on his journey. A photo essay from opposing perspectives.

Two different views of the execution of Romanian wartime dictator Ion Antonescu confront one another. On one side is silent footage recorded in 1946 by cameraman Ovidiu Gologan, and on the other side are scenes from a biographical film shot five decades later by director Sergiu Nicolaescu.

Based on an idea by Eisenstein, who dreamt of composing the 101 poses of Robert Macaire - a popular French character epitomizing the unscrupulous swindler - as represented in the 101 lithographs of the series Caricaturana by Honoré Daumier. First, a montage of the gestures as Eisenstein envisaged. Then, original texts are added to the caricatures. And finally, we took the liberty to use them as a commentary to some current news.

A photo album bears silent witness to history. Handsomely bound and carefully labelled, it traces the path of the 6th Regiment of the Romanian army in the war years of 1941 and 1942. Romania had allied itself with Nazi Germany to fight the Soviet army. This film soberly dissects the perspective of these war photographs. Making use of quotations from historical sources, it puts these banal images of everyday military life in a larger context, supplementing that which has been deliberately left out.

Radu Jude / Romania / 2007 / 26 mins Tavi, a man in his late thirties, discovers that Alexandra, his 4 years old daughter, is not calling him “Dad” anymore.

A disturbed man records himself leaving a long message to the loved ones. (Basically, the whole movie is done in only one shot which is the man’s recording). His message, both funny and melodramatical, proves to be a farewell message. The man accuses his friends and family for not understanding him, he also accuses the post-communist Romanian society which doesn’t work properly. After this message, the man shoots himself in the head. He doesn’t die, he is just badly wounded. What follows is a hilarious and horrific agony: the man is bleeding and crying for help. The neighbours get in and call the Ambulance…

On June 29, 1941, the Jewish residents of the city of Iasi were rounded up and beaten, shops and homes were looted, and most of the men were shot or crowded onto trains, where they later died of asphyxiation. While Germans took part in the pogrom, the majority of the perpetrators were Romanian policemen, military officers and civilians. How can a film deal with this crime? Radu Jude and Adrian Cioflâncă have opted for a radical, pared-down approach: their film lists the names of those who died from A to Z, illustrating them with photographs from passports and family albums. Astoundingly sober accounts are heard in voiceover. Through repetition, accumulation and variation, the filmmakers make the scale of the atrocity tangible, allow nuances to emerge and give the number of victims – 13,000 – concrete form, until, at the end, after about two-and-a-half hours, they draw on an entirely different visual register.

It is the story of Mugur Calinescu, a Romanian teenager who wrote graffiti messages of protest against the regime of dictator Nicolae Ceausescu and was subsequently apprehended, interrogated, and ultimately crushed by the secret police.

During the summer of 1937, Emanuel, a young man in his early twenties, is committed to a sanatorium on the Black Sea coast for treatment of his bone tuberculosis. The treatment consists of painful spine punctures that confine him to a plaster on a stretcher-bed. Little by little, as Emanuel gets accustomed to the sadness of his new life, he discovers that inside the sanatorium there is still a life to be lived to the fullest.

"I do not care if we go down in history as barbarians." These words, spoken in the Council of Ministers of the summer of 1941, started the ethnic cleansing on the Eastern Front. The film attempts to comment on this statement.
