Battle of Soho (2016)
Battle of Soho IMDb TMDB Douban
In November 2014 the Iconic club Madame Jojos closed its doors. This event being interpreted by many as the death knell of Soho. The closure of this historic venue which premiered some of Londons most bizarre, daring and offbeat nightlife for more than half a century is seen by many as an unprecedented cultural catastrophe. In a draconian move by Westminster Madame Jojos liquor license had been taken away under the excuse of a violent incident which had occurred there. Over 12 gay and straight venues have been closed in recent years. Not the least of which include South Londons celebrated Royal Vauxhall Tavern (which was sold in 2014), and what remain are now at risk. There have also been closures in other cities such as Brighton and Manchester, two major artistic hubs; but it is in London where the issue has become most serious. The gentrification of Soho affects the LGBT community and its Drag Queen sub-culture, but the cabaret atmosphere of the entire neighborhood in enormous ways. This active pursuit to destroy a bubbling and vibrant part of the citys heart is viewed by many as an atrocity akin to turning the lights off on Broadway. An active movement to bring a halt to this disaster has begun to unfold with one organization after another emerging to fight for Soho. Organizations made up of citizens and celebrities have sprung up to combat this onslaught. Will they win this battle and save Soho? The Battle of Soho seeks to document and explore the history, events, and people that make up the elements of this ongoing cultural catastrophe.

酷儿艺术 (2017)
Queer As Art Douban
James House actor: 斯蒂芬·弗雷 / 伊萨克·朱利恩 …
other title: Queer As Art
This film invites a stellar cast of interviewees from across the arts to reflect on the contribution of lesbian and gay people to British cultural life since the decriminalisation of male homosexuality 50 years ago. Ranging broadly across popular culture, the visual arts, literature, theatre and film, the programme celebrates how the British arts, before 1967 and since, have been a haven to those growing up creative and gay. The film considers how artists' sexuality might have shaped their art, often giving it a unique outsider’s perspective on British life, and a sometimes subversive sense of wit and style. Artists produced sophisticated work that excited audiences with its “otherness”, bringing new types of characters to television and film, gender ambiguity to pop music, and glimpses of bohemia in the visual arts. These have remained driving forces for British art to this day. But the film also asks whether growing acceptance has been to some extent a double-edged sword for artists themselves. Has homosexuality's move towards the mainstream made the exploration of queer themes less urgent and less interesting? Now that there's a wide range of gay lifestyles on show in British culture, the question of how much an artist’s sexuality really matters to their art has become inescapable.
