小学館『ビッグコミックオリジナル』に1974年から連載されている西岸良平作の同名の大長寿漫画が原作。昭和30年代（1950年代後半から1960年代前半まで）の「夕日町三丁目」という町が舞台となっている。2005年には『ALWAYS 三丁目の夕日』というタイトルで実写映画化され、大ヒットを記録。国内の多くの映画賞を受賞し話題となった。主人公は鈴木オートという小さな修理工場の一人息子、一平。機械が大好きで遊びの天才の一平にかかれば帰り道も突然、未開のジャングルに変身し。ジャングルジムも宇宙ロケットになってしまう。だから、学校でも人気者で…。一平が仲間たちと織り成すほのぼのとした物語。
