Pierre Bourdieu, sociologue, professeur-titulaire de la chaire de sociologie au Collège de France présente les acquis des recherches qu'il mène sur la télévision. Après avoir défini la notion de "champ journalistique", espace social structuré par des rapports de domination obéissant à ses propres règles, il montre comment la télévision, en pénétrant l'univers du journalisme, lui a imposé ses façons de fonctionner : règne de l'audimat, qui s'est propagé dans le système entier du journalisme, travail hâtif, fausse concurrence... La télévision a aussi étendu son pouvoir à des univers comme celui des artistes, des chercheurs... dont les normes se trouvent bouleversés par "l'effet télévision". Ce film fait suite à un document intitulé "Sur la télévision".
