Five ex-soldiers go to a small town in Oregon to help a friend investigate the murder of his brother.

A cantankerous widower (Garner) who is virtually living the life of a recluse is forced to rejoin his community when his Godchild (Skaggs) gets in trouble and a childhood friend (Cobbs), a black tenant farmer, refuses to belatedly accept a Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in World War II.

Charlie is a young woman who is thrilled that her favorite Uncle Charlie is coming home for good. But she soon discovers that her namesake, a "Wall Street financier," has a deep, dark secret. And knowledge of that secret by anyone can prove to be deadly.
