Hellé est une jeune sauvageonne sourde et muette dont personne ne s'occupe hormis, quelquefois, les bûcherons quand le besoin d'une femme les pousse à s'attaquer à elle. Ayant vécu en dehors de toute éducation, elle n'a le sentiment ni du Bien, ni du Mal. Sa mère, une femme de chambre grecque, est morte en la mettant au monde et la montagne est le seul domaine que connaisse Hellé. Jusqu'au jour où Fabrice, un adolescent, vient passer les vacances d'été chez sa mère. Auprès de la petite muette, il va découvrir l'amour. Pour celle-ci, c'est un autre univers qui s'ouvre : Fabrice la traite comme une déesse et un ange de pureté. Le frère de Fabrice, Julien, un jeune soldat traumatisé par la guerre d'Indochine, tentera de salir Hellé dans l'esprit de l'adolescent. Mais en vain, et Julien, dégouté de lui-même, se suicidera.
