意大利新现实主义的代表作，但因其反应现实的力度致使当时的意大利政府采取了全面封杀的态度，结果使这部片子的知名度大幅度降低，但本片无论从表现手法，还是演员表演，到对社会，人性的刻画揭露，无不表现出深厚的功力和艺术水准，其成就足以使它超越《偷自行车的人》成为新现实主义的巅峰之作！

A young lawyer who married for money the wealthy daughter of a speculator discovers, on his wedding night, his impotence. A priest and childhood friend, Don Marco, would apparently solve the situation but things will soon turn to tragedy.

改编自美国J.凯恩的小说《邮差总按二次铃》，完成于1941年，在剧本必须由法西斯政府审查的拍摄条件下，维斯康提把这个通奸谋杀亲夫的畸恋故事，拍成充满绝望宿命气息的作品。
片中一方面是出身贫家的女主角，身不由己嫁给肥胖粗俗的酒店老板，她完全没有逃脱被豢养（并不时被羞辱）生活的勇气，而男主角则是个流浪的无业游民，他经不起女主角的诱惑，犯下致命的罪行，艰困的社会生活条件，明确烘托出男女主角各自别无选择、一拍即合的宿命孽缘。初执导演筒的维斯康提，在片中已经展现他后期作品中最大的特色：对人物不克自拔情欲心理的细腻描画，在饮食间两性对对方身体的凝视中，维斯康提把艰困的物质生活和不受拘束的内心肉欲作了明确的并列，弥补了通奸过程的简略。

弗朗西斯卡（多利斯·道灵 Doris Dowling 饰）是小偷沃尔特（维托里奥·加斯曼 Vittorio Gassman 饰）的情妇，沃尔特自私贪婪心狠手辣，常常虐待弗朗西斯卡，令她苦不堪言。最终，弗朗西斯卡决定从他的身边逃开，前往波流河自寻生路。

Francesco Dominici, tornato dalla guerra, cerca invano lavoro. Una notte, aiutato dalla sua innamorata, Lucia e dalla sorella, Maria Grazia, ruba delle pecore ad Agostino Bonfiglio, un pastore arricchitosi in malo modo durante la guerra, che si dice abbia rubato, a suo tempo, le pecore di Francesca. Francesco viene denunciato ed arrestato. I testimoni, chiamati in causa, vengono sopraffatti o comprati da Agostino e Francesco viene condannato a quattro anni. Agostino vorrebbe sposare Lucia, ma il matrimonio va a monte per l'intromissione di Maria Grazia, alla quale Agostino ha usato violenza. Francesco evade dalla prigione con un compagno. Inseguito dai carabinieri, viene salvato da Lucia, della quale diviene l'amante. Mentre i carabinieri danno la caccia a Francesco, questi va in traccia d'Agostino, che temendone la vendetta ha cercato di farlo assassinare. Agostino fugge, trascinandosi dietro Maria Grazia e le pecore. Maria Grazia viene brutalmente strangolata da Agostino, che accecato dalla paura, precipita in un burrone. Francesco si consegna ai carabinieri, fidando nella revisione del processo e nell'assoluzione.

Released in the United States in the early 50's under the title of WOMAN, this obscure early Rossellini film was made at the end of the war and completed by Marcello Pagliero. It is a sensational little tragedy about a prostitute who returns from the city to her home town where she is variously loved, spurned, and lusted over. The grim, fatalistic atmosphere bears a good deal of resemblance to the much better known contemporary masterpiece OSSESSIONE, by Luchino Visconti. In fact Massimo Girotti appears in both films. Elli Parvo is quite riveting in the main role.
