During an unannounced visit to Berlin, Jakob and Hanna let their three grown up children know that they are no longer able to support them financially. Karla, Arnolt and Sonni seem to live successful city lives; but, on closer inspection, they are in the middle of different life-crises, which have a common cause: lack of independence. After a big family quarrel and a painful revelation of life-lies, every single relative is made aware of how little he or she knows about the others – though still interdependent.

An ordinary family faces a catastrophe: the serious illness of one of its children. Each member of the family sees their personal life impacted by this ordeal. Disasters make people more human, though not necessarily better.

When Nina finds out that her teenage son Lars has been injured in an accident at school, she is faced with a dilemma: can she leave behind the rehearsals with her orchestra in order to be there completely for him… in a situation that could be a life-changing moment? The decision she makes is a compromise: for five days, she will leave Munich to take Lars on a getaway, to the island in western France where they usually spend their summer vacation – a place full of fond memories and significance to Lars. In winter, however, the island is no holiday paradise, but windy, dark and cold. In the small house on the beach, mother and son are forced to face each other. Thoughts of music haunt Nina, the calls from the mainland worry her. Is she just sabotaging her career, which she has fought so hard for… and for what? Lars withdraws further every day. Misunderstandings multiply, suppositions turn into suspicions: was Lars a witness to a gruesome crime at school? Did he even participate in it? When a winter storm cuts the last connection to the mainland, a dangerous confrontation ensues.

Morgane is 38-years old, has three children, two exes and an IQ of 160; her destiny as a cleaner is turned upside-down when her extraordinary abilities are spotted by the police who offer her a job as a consultant.

Nick and Anna are off to Switzerland for six months. Nick wants to collect recipes of local cuisine, and Anna finally hopes to write a new book. The time away might be good for their relationship too, for Anna knows about Nick’s affair with their neighbour Andrea, who threw herself out the window. Mischa will be taking care of the fish and the philodendron in their Viennese apartment while they’re gone. On the drive to Switzerland, they collide with a sheep. As the narrative progresses, the more it undermines certainties and sows doubts. At what point did the plot actually begin? Are the characters really themselves, or merely figments of someone else’s imagination? First the timeframes become confused, before spatial boundaries are also suspended. Disconcerting parallels emerge between the Vienna apartment and the Swiss chalet. And doesn’t the ice cream seller in the neighbouring town look just like Mischa? Is Anna’s jealousy unfounded, or should she listen to the advice of the talking cat? Is Mischa actually Andrea? Will every question be answered by the end? Wait and see, for the mind games that Tiere allows to play out between Vienna and the Swiss Alps are most sophisticated.

3 Germans. 2 midlife crises. But only 1 Ireland

In this acutely observed and sharply written debut feature from director Sylvie Michel, the contrasting parenting philosophies of a well-to-do divorcee and his immigrant cleaning lady becomes an angry debate over deeper issues of social class and cultural values when their teenage children disappear after a night on the town.
