During his summer holiday, Kawasaki Ryuichi (Ryuzaki Ichiro), a handsome engineer in his late twenties, visits his teacher and mentor, Professor Inagaki (Sugai Ichiro), at his seaside home. There he meets the professor's lovely young wife, Sachiko (Hamada Yuriko), and is unsettled by the striking resemblance she bears to his wife, who died three years earlier. Attracted to Sachiko, he does his best to hide his feelings. The couple, however, senses a deep-seated melancholy in him. Attributing it to the loss of his wife, they urge him to marry their niece, Kaoru, but he is not interested. Shortly after, Fumiko , Sachiko's older sister, realizes that Sachiko and Kawasaki have feelings for each other, but she keeps her counsel. One day Kawasaki, Sachiko, and Kaoru go boating when a storm forces them to stay overnight at a hotel. Unable to sleep, Kawasaki takes a walk along the beach where he finds Sachiko, also unable to sleep. He declares his love for her.

郊外の都営住宅に住むサラリーマンの三田村俊二は妻を喪うと、歯科医の幸子を後妻に迎えた。幸子は結婚後も実父の医院へ手伝いに出かけるので二人が出勤したあとは、先妻との間に生まれた修と俊二の妹で母代りの喜世子の二人暮らしというわけである。やがて幸子の実家の肝入りで、喜世子が硫安工場で働く藤田と見合いをしたころ、俊二は名古屋に転任ときまった。ところが幸子の母は一人娘の彼女を手許から離す気になれず、幸子もまたそうした母にひきずられているようだった。俊二はひとりで名古屋に発った。喜世子は急に冷たくなった藤田の態度が納得できず、勇を鼓して会ってみると、意外にも幸子の母から縁談解消の申し入れがあったからだと判った。だが、二人の心は却って強く結ばれた。喜世子の手紙で委細を知った俊二は、幸子と別れる覚悟で上京したが、一方、幸子も修のためによき母となる決心で実家から帰ってきた。俊二の呼び声を聞きながら、裏の原っぱで石を投げている修の眼は、うれし涙で濡れていた。

In the autumn of 1945, Petty Officer Tadashi Yamaji is among the numerous war crimes suspects facing death on the gallows for maltreatment of Allied women and children interned in camp Kampili. Kampili is located some ten kilometers outside Macassar on the island of Celebes. Eighteen-hundred Allied women and children were interned for the duration of the war. Yamaji's iron rule for camp administration is : No violence; hands off internees; He also endeavors to establish self-administration by internees while aiming at a self-supporting camp economy within six months. His ingenuity gains the camp numerous pigs to enrich their diet, and sewing machines with to make fatigue uniforms for the military. The internees are grateful for what little aid he can give them. As the tides of war changes, Allied planes bomb the camp in error. But the surrender of Japan changes everything, and the internees join forces to save their former camp commander from the gallows.

大正二年八月，长野县高等小学校的修学旅行集体登山时由于突发的气象遭难事故，描述极限状态的师生之间的关爱，根据新田次郎原作改编的电影。 中箕輪尋常高等小学校高等科二年生二十五名、青年会員九名、引率清水、征矢、赤羽校長の三十七名が、修学旅行中、暴風雨に襲われ、山小屋を急造して避難していた。赤羽校長にとっては、この中央アルプス駒ケ岳登山は執念の行事であった。それは彼の“子供は生まれついては強くも正しくもない、それを鍛え、困難を乗り越えられる人間にするのが教育だ”という方針の為である。しかし、清水訓導は、もともとこの登山には反対であった。彼は、同僚の樋口や伊吹やえとともに自由な理想教育を目指し、校長とは度々論争をしていた。赤羽校長の腕の中で古屋時松がこと切れると、小屋の中にパニックが起こった。一人の青年が、屋根にしてあった着ゴザを引きはがして嵐の中に逃げ出すと、青年達は次々と後を追った。そして、生徒と教師と一部青年会員の悲劇の下山が始まった。着ゴザを手に入れられなかった生徒達が次々と死に、校長は自分のシャツを生徒に着せて死んだ。征矢は山を下り救援を求め、清水は負傷した生徒を岩陰に連れていった。この登山に最も強く反対していた有賀主任訓導は、救援本部にかけつけると、すべてのシャツを生徒に着せて、凍死している赤羽校長の姿があった。有賀は教育の方針の違いを越えた大きな愛を見る思いがした。村葬の日、学校関係者や校長未亡人の回りには遺族たちからの罵声が渦巻き、校長の家には連日投石が続いた。生きて帰った清水、征矢には査問会が待っていた。周囲の反対を押しての結婚を控えていた樋口訓導は、校長に“今が一番大切な時だから残るように”といわれていたが、校長の後を追って自殺する。有賀は病身を押して教師と生徒の心のふれあいを記念する遭難碑を建立し、その記念碑除幕式の翌日、世を去った。それから十二年後、修学旅行は再会され、それは今にうけつがれている。
