A film about our garbage that is found in the most remote areas and about the people who try to dispose of it. Not only in the sea and on coasts, also in the Arctic, the jungle, high up on the mountains and deep inside the desert, garbage is found almost everywhere in various forms and dimensions, sometimes as whole car wrecks, old TV sets or simply construction rubble, but mostly in the form of disintegrated plastic particles a few millimetres in size. Humanity has handed out its visiting cards thoroughly.

An astonishing and haunting documentary by Nikolaus Geyrhalter (Our Daily Bread and 7915 KM). which looks at life in the town of Pripyat 12 years after the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe, referred to by its residents simply as “the accident”. Geyrhalter creates a moving portrait of the everyday life of people who still live and work in “the zone”, the 30 km area around the Chernobyl plant where 116,000 residents were evacuated.

Abendland is a brilliantly evocative film essay about the Western world, specifically its affluence and exclusiveness. Director Geyrhalter explores this theme with striking images, all filmed at night, that are typical of a modern, industrialized, wealthy civilization: a streamlined crematorium, a complicated security surveillance room, a cold and eerily quiet television news studio. Mass mechanization is a common thread throughout, turning what should be intimate exchanges between people into depersonalized mechanical operations. The director states that he wanted to “capture Europe in a film.” And it is captured, with a wealth of details that makes us look at Europe and ourselves in a new way.

A motor-sports spectacle that kicks up plenty of dust. On the trail of the 2007 Dakar Rallye ‘7915 KM’ undertakes a search, along the way encountering the variety to be found in Africa’s present in Morocco, Sahrawi Republic, Mauritania, Mali and Senegal. ‘7915 KM’ demonstrates the extent of this distance, which is the result of political and economic conditions, and also the ideas and prejudices to be found in both Europe and Africa. It also makes the closeness tangible, which becomes clear in the stories of everyday life, work, hopes and worries. Keeping the sobering reality in mind, it creates an homage to humanity and slowness which questions deep-seated perceptions and the role of Europeans in numerous, presumably African, problems.

With a sharp eye, Nikolaus Geyrhalter (Homo sapiens, Our Daily Bread) explores the few square kilometers around the Brenner Pass. In 2016, this border between Austria and Italy suddenly became the setting for changing EU policy on the refugee crisis. After the closure of the Balkan route, Austria was worried that refugees would flood through the Brenner Pass. So in the spring of 2016, the government took “construction measures,” a euphemism for putting up a fence. Geyrhalter conducted detailed interviews with local police officers, hikers, farmers, toll collectors and cafe owners, filmed in precisely composed shots. Here in this small border area, we hear a wide range of views, often remarkably balanced, and ranging from covert xenophobia to criticism of the populist government. Geyrhalter respects every opinion and makes no judgments. The camera records a static and almost immobile Tirol using wide-angle lenses and long shots. In his portrait of the locals and their deeply-rooted traditions, Geyrhalter also hints at the absurdity of the border, telling a larger, urgent story about the state of Europe.
